An
Empathic Helping Skills Program
Part of the doctoral requirements for New Orleans Baptist
Theological Seminary, this dissertation reported upon and evaluated
a program developed to teach inmates "empathy." After
detailed analysis, it was proved that empathy can be taught to prisoners.
In substantiating the need for the program, the author researched the history of
relevant programming relating to prison inmate growth and chronicled some of the
history of in-prison programming. Chapters 1-4 will be of interest to the
specialist in in-prison programming, for therein is a significant portion of the
history with a special focus upon Texas.
The
program itself was culled from the best writers and teachers of basic
"Empathy" and "Helping Skills" up to 1997. Of most
interest to lay persons will be Appendixes 3a & 3b, which contain the
handouts of all the lessons -- the major substance of the "Empathy
Program" developed.
